APOLLO JEWELRY began with a love story!

The love of two people for each other, the love for Santorini, and the love for high quality jewelry.

Yiannis Psomas a 26 year Greek man, who was already working for some years in the jewelry business, and Karin Steiner a 22 year young Austrian woman, who just had finished with her studies in economy and business in Austria, met in August 1985 on the Greek island SANTORINI during her holidays, fell in love, and decided to spend their lives together.
1990 they successfully opened their first small jewelry store on this magical Greek island, and over the years the business extended to three stores with a carefully selected of high quality collection of modern and classic traditional Greek and Byzantine handmade designs in gold and silver.

Hard work, honesty, respect, trustworthiness, reliability, responsibility, personal customer assistance and outstanding customer service had been their guidance in every step.

By now, they have over 35 years of experience and thousands of fully satisfied customers from all over the world, of different nationalities, with different tastes and needs.

Apollo jewelry is a family business working together mainly with small workshops in Greece, and realise it as a task to represent and cultivate a small but important part of the world’s artistic heritage and culture!

Keeping high values in the conduct of business with both, their partners and employees, have made them one of the most respected names on the island and in Greece.

Yiannis and Karin say: “Now it is time in addition to our new store on Santorini/ Fira (main Jewelry street), to offer our customers  also the possibility to shop comfortably from their home at our ONLINE SHOP, but personal customer assistance, guidances and satisfying our customers, with high quality of jewelry at a fair price, will still and always be our priority!“

About jewelry:

Jewelry helps in enhancing one’s beauty, and also symbolizes wealth, power and status. It is a form of art for self and creative expression, and some people use them as part of their tradition and culture.

Very popular still in our-days as lucky charm, is the „evil eye“ which provides protection against the “bad”.

History about Greek jewelry:

Through hostile occupations by the Persians, Roman’s, Ottomans and Germans, internal strife, good economy and bad economy, the Greeks were making jewelry!

In ancient Greece it was seen as a symbol of power, wealth, social status,  celebration to the gods, and in some cases considered as protection against evil spirits.

The Greek Mycenaean civilization (1600-1100BC) brought the first big rise of jewelry use. Gold became the primary decorative raw material, although silver, lead, bronze and various alloys were also used.

They skillfully crafted richly decorated rings, necklaces, armbands, thigh bands earrings and pendants with motifs of flowers, humans figures and other engravings. Pieces were usually inlaid with pearls and dazzling gems such as emerald, garnet, carnelian, banded agate, sardonyx, chalcedony and rock crystal.

Some women even had jewels sewn into the fabric of their clothing.

The use of molds and thin leafs of gold enabled Greeks to manufacture some of the most beautiful pieces of antique jewelry that are preserved today, and are seen as true masterpieces.

Even though Greeks received techniques for making gold items from the nearby kingdoms of Egypt and Mesopotamia around 5000 years ago, they managed to retain their unique style that remained unchanged in the centuries that followed.
